Parvovirus / Adenovirus / Distemper


Most reactions are from the Adenovirus vaccine, but you can have a reaction from any shot given to any animal

Puppies start signs 3 hours to 10 days after administering.

  • Fever.
  • Sluggishness.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Facial or paw swelling and/or hives.
  • Vomiting.
  • Diarrhea.
  • Pain or swelling around the injection site.
  • Collapse, difficulty breathing, and seizures (anaphylactic shock)

Additional signs we have encountered related to the Adenovirus Type 2 vaccine.

  • Swelling specifically in the muzzle, around the eyes, and pads of the feet
  • Drooling
  • Consistent drinking
  • Belly bloating
  • Rear legs stuck in the stretched position
  • Blood in the stools
  • Uncontrollable shaking
  • Pupils not dilating
  • Eyes changing to a grey color and can turn the eye white. (friends puppy)
  • Temperatures after anaphylactic shock from 104 – 107 degrees
  • Death

What we did to help make the puppies through the reaction.

  • Submerged the puppies in cold water until fever went down to 102
  • Sub Q fluids
  • Keep allowing and helping the puppy drink electrolyte water
  • Checking the temperature hourly
  • Do not keep moving your puppy. The muscles tense so much their body will be very sore
  • Rear legs stuck in the stretched position
