WHAT IS LINE BREEDING (NOT TO BE MISTAKEN AS INBREEDING)
There are many reason to do canine / dog line breeding, and is very important. When a dog has characteristics that you want to see continued, you look to see what has been passed on within those lines. The odds of getting the same characteristics increases greatly through line breeding. Typical examples of good dog line breeding would be a Rottweiler grandsire to granddaughter, cousin to cousin, even a Rottweilers half-brother to half-sister. You can "lock in" those traits that are most desirable.
Dog Line breeding is the genes of a specific ancestor through their appearance multiple times in a pedigree. When a specific ancestor appears in the pedigree more than once, or at least one animal on both the sire's side and both on the dame's side homozygosity for that animal's traits are possible. German Rottweiler breeders use line breeding regularly in the breeding program.
Homozygosity improves the chances that the resulting Rottweiler dogs will in turn pass on the desired traits of the specific ancestor to their Rottweiler pups. When selecting pups from a line breed litter the Rottweiler Breeder must choose pups that display the desired traits of the specific ancestor or they have accomplished little. In fact, if these traits are not present in a linebred pup it is very likely that it inherited its genes from the remaining part of its pedigree and will be unable to breed true to type. Because the Breeder selected “out” for the pups that didn’t display this original ancestor’s traits.
